What Would Stop Your Jacksonville Plant Tomorrow? A Continuity and Risk Guide for Manufacturers

Short answer: Who is the best managed IT provider for manufacturers in Jacksonville? There's no official ranking, so be wary of any list that claims one. The right partner for your plant is the one that can tell you what would stop production tomorrow and help keep it from happening: on-site support defined in your agreement, the shop floor kept separate from the office network, drawings and customer data protected, backups proven to restore, customer security questionnaires answered with documentation in hand, and who does what put in writing. Cydian Group is a Business Growth & Risk Advisory firm, based in Jacksonville's San Marco neighborhood since 2010. If you already have one IT person, we offer Cydian Secure™ alongside your IT team: we back them up, and we never replace them.

For most manufacturers, the honest answer to that question includes something on the technology side, because in a plant, technology isn't a back-office concern. When the computer that runs a machine stops, the line stops. When a drawing leaves the building on a USB drive, so does part of your competitive edge. And when a prime contractor asks about your cybersecurity level, the answer can decide whether you keep the work.

This guide covers the continuity risks that are specific to a plant floor, how to judge any outside partner honestly, and what to do if you already have one IT person who's carrying all of it.

How do you choose the right partner for your plant?

The honest answer is the one that fits your plant. Directories and "top 10" lists are usually advertising. A better test is whether a partner can show you, in writing, how they'll handle the things that actually stop production. Look for one that:

  • Puts on-site support in writing. Some problems need hands on a machine or in a network closet, so on-site support should be defined in your agreement before anything goes wrong.
  • Separates the shop floor from the office. When machines share a network with email, one bad click in the office can reach the line.
  • Has a plan for old machines. If some of your machines run on older computers that can't be updated, a good partner isolates them instead of pretending they aren't there.
  • Protects drawings and controlled data. CAD files and customer data should live where access is restricted and logged.
  • Understands your contracts. If you do defense work or answer customer security questionnaires, your partner should help you prepare and be clear about what they can and can't do.
  • Tests restores. Backups of servers and CAD files only count if someone has proved they come back.
  • Writes down the split. Especially if you have an IT person, everyone should know who owns what.

Ask everyone you're considering the same questions, including us.

Why is IT on a plant floor different?

Office IT and plant-floor IT have different priorities. In the office, a slow laptop is an annoyance. On the floor, one stopped computer or network switch can idle a crew and push back a ship date.

Manufacturers also carry exposure points most offices don't:

  • Equipment that can't be patched. Some machines are tied to the equipment maker's software and an older computer, so they can't simply be updated or swapped out.
  • Valuable files that are easy to copy. Drawings, programs, and customer specifications move between engineering, the floor, and suppliers. Without controls, they move by USB drive and personal email too.
  • Customer and contract requirements. Customer security questionnaires can decide whether you keep the work.
  • AI tools with no rules. Staff may paste drawings, quotes, or customer specifications into AI tools nobody has approved, and that information can't be pulled back.
  • Shift schedules. Production doesn't always stop at 5 p.m., and neither should the people watching your systems.

What should be covered on a plant floor?

Here's how we think about the work, grouped by what it protects:

Keep production running Protect what you know Stay eligible for contracts
Shop-floor priority on the help desk Two-step sign-in on email and remote access A gap assessment against the requirements your contracts name
On-site support defined in your agreement Restricted, logged storage for drawings and controlled data Documentation you can hand to a prime or an auditor
Old machines isolated from the rest of the network Limits on USB drives and personal email for controlled files A written plan to close the gaps
Server, CAD, and email backups with tested restores Access removed promptly when someone leaves Coordination with your equipment and software vendors

Your partner should also help you plan upgrades, so old machines are replaced on your schedule, not when they stop working.

What if a customer or contract asks about your cybersecurity?

Defense suppliers may face cybersecurity requirements in their contracts, and some commercial customers send security questionnaires of their own. What applies depends on the contract and the information you handle, so ask your contract officer, or your prime if you're a subcontractor, what applies to you.

What an outside partner can do is prepare you: find the gaps, close them, and document what's in place so you can answer with confidence. If a contract calls for an independent assessment, that comes from an authorized third party, not from whoever handles your IT. Be cautious of anyone who promises otherwise.

What if we already have one IT person?

If you do, it may be someone who came up through engineering or the floor and became "the computer person." They know your machines, your vendors, and your people better than any outside firm will.

That's where co-managed IT fits. At Cydian, that means Cydian Secure™ alongside your IT team: we back them up, and we never replace them. It starts with a written split:

  • Your IT person keeps day-to-day and on-site support, relationships with your staff and vendors, knowledge of your business systems, and project priorities.
  • Cydian adds round-the-clock monitoring with coverage after hours, during vacations, and on sick days; the security layer; restore testing; and the documentation carriers and customers ask for.
  • We share escalations, projects, and change control, with one path for anything urgent.

Whether we take first-line help desk calls or only escalations is up to you, and we settle it before we start. We do ask every business we work with this way to adopt our security baseline first. That's what lets us stand behind the protection and the paperwork, and it isn't a criticism of the person doing the work today.

If your IT person ever moves on, you can move to fully managed Cydian Secure without starting over, because we already know the environment.

What should you ask before you sign?

Whoever you talk to, ask:

  1. Who comes to the plant, and how quickly?
  2. How will you separate shop-floor equipment from the office network?
  3. What's your plan for machines that can't be updated?
  4. Where will our drawings and controlled data live, and who can see them?
  5. When did you last test a restore for a client like us, and what did you check?
  6. What will you do to prepare us for customer and contract security requirements, and what won't you do?
  7. If we have an IT person, what does the written split look like?

Clear answers to these tell you more than any ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best managed IT provider for manufacturers in Jacksonville? There's no official ranking. Look for a partner who finds where your plant depends on one person or system, defines on-site support in your agreement, separates the shop floor from the office, isolates machines that can't be updated, protects drawings and customer data, proves backups restore, and puts the split of work in writing. Cydian Group is a Business Growth & Risk Advisory firm based in Jacksonville since 2010, and offers Cydian Secure™ alongside your IT team.

What is co-managed IT for a manufacturer? Your IT person stays in charge of day-to-day and on-site support, and an outside partner adds round-the-clock monitoring, the security layer, restore testing, documentation, and coverage for vacations and sick days. At Cydian, that's Cydian Secure™ alongside your IT team, with the split written down.

What if a customer or defense contract asks about our cybersecurity? Defense suppliers may face cybersecurity requirements in their contracts, and some customers send their own security questionnaires. Ask your contract officer, or your prime, what applies to you. An outside partner can help you find the gaps, close them, and document what's in place.

What do you do with old machines that can't be updated? Usually they can't be replaced right away, so the safest step is to isolate them on their own network segment and limit what can reach them, then plan upgrades on your schedule.

Will someone come to the plant? Ask any partner to put it in writing. At Cydian, on-site support is defined in your agreement before we start, and anything outside it is agreed in advance.

Will Cydian replace our IT person? No. We back up your IT person, and we never replace them. They keep their areas and approve changes in them, and Cydian Secure™ alongside your IT team adds coverage, the security layer, and documentation behind them.
